Why Are Insurers Refusing to Insure Range Rovers in London?

Whilst London has an abundance of public transport options, the car is still a popular mode of transport in the UK’s capital, especially for Londoners who want to get out of the city every once in a while. One of the most popular car types in London – and around the country – is the Range Rover, however many are finding it difficult to find insurance for that vehicle. So why is this, and what can you do if you’re looking to insure your Range Rover in London?

Valuable Vehicle

The biggest reason why insurers are reluctant to cover is because of one simple statistic: the Range Rover is the second most stolen car in the UK. Because there are a number of high-value Range Rovers on the road, it can be a lucrative vehicle to steal, and if you work out how to steal one Range Rover, it’s likely you can steal multiple.

Range Rovers are also easy to move on, as Range Rovers are popular not just in the UK, but abroad too. There wouldn’t be a shortage of buyers, especially if the stolen nature of the car is covered-up.

The popularity of the car is the factor at play, as there is no issue with similar value cars “such as Volvo XC90s or Porsches”. It’s not a security flaw with Range Rovers either, rather that the popularity and lucrativeness attracts thieves who use specialist equipment to steal that type of vehicle.

High Premiums or Refusal to Cover

The popularity of Range Rovers as a target for criminals means that insurers will only offer high premiums if you’re looking to insure your Range Rover. Insurers are also reluctant to insure Range Rovers in London, considering it’s a built-up area, theft is a regular occurrence and on-street parking is common for many residential areas. Insurers will either charge high premiums, or they will refuse to offer cover altogether.

For example, a study by Autocar found that for a Range Rover SV P510E, costing just under £210,000, the quotes ranged from £4350 to just under £6000, with a £1250 excess. For similarly valued cars, such as the Bently Bentayga, the quotes were around £2000 with £1250 excess.

Sometimes, if you can’t find the insurance premium you’re looking for from a private provider, you might look to go to the manufacturer instead. However, in this case, insuring your Land Rover in London isn’t possible, as the manufacturer is refusing to cover their vehicles in the city.

How You Can Insure Your Range Rover in London

When it comes to Range Rovers, you might be met with insurers who refuse to offer cover, or whose premiums are too high. Doing this manually could cost you time, whilst also being stressful.

Things that you can take into account that could improve your chances include storing your Range Rover off-street and in a secure location. The borough or area you live in could also have an impact.
